How Gold Prices Work in the Dubai Souk
The price you pay for a gold piece in the Dubai souk isn't one number – it's a chain of them. Understanding that chain is the difference between paying a fair price and overpaying. Here's exactly how it's built.
1. The international spot price
Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce, 24 hours a day. This "spot" price is the foundation of every gold price in the world, including Dubai's. It moves constantly with global markets.
2. The DJG daily rate
The Dubai Jewellery Group (DJG) publishes a daily UAE gold rate in dirhams per gram for each karat. Shops across the country display it, and it updates through the day as the global price moves. This is the rate you'll see on the big board in the souk.
3. Karat purity
Karat measures how pure the gold is, and the gram rate scales with it:
| Karat | Purity | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | Coins, bars, investment gold |
| 22K | 91.6% | Most jewellery, bridal gold |
| 21K | 87.5% | Everyday jewellery (popular in UAE) |
| 18K | 75% | Diamond settings, modern designs |
A gram of 24K costs the most; 18K the least. Always check the karat stamped (hallmarked) on the piece matches what you're being charged for.
4. The making charge
On top of the gold value, the shop adds a making charge for the workmanship. This is the only negotiable part of the price, and it varies a lot between shops. See our full guide to fair making charges in Dubai.
5. VAT
Finally, 5% VAT is applied to gold jewellery (on the gold value plus making charge combined). Investment-grade gold – 24K bars and coins meeting purity rules – is zero-rated. Full detail in our VAT on gold guide.
Putting it together
So the price on your receipt is: (DJG gram rate × weight) + (making charge × weight) + 5% VAT. When you know each piece of that, no shop can bury a surprise in the total.
The free Gold Sooq Guide app shows the live gold rate and does this whole breakdown for you – enter the weight, karat and making charge, and it shows the fair total before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
What is the DJG gold rate?
The daily UAE gold rate published by the Dubai Jewellery Group and displayed in shops. It's the spot price converted to dirhams plus a small retail premium, and it updates through the day.
Why is the shop price higher than the spot gold price?
The displayed retail rate is typically 3–5% above spot to cover refining, fabrication and retail costs. You also pay a making charge and 5% VAT on jewellery.
What's the difference between 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K?
Purity: 24K is 99.9%, 22K is 91.6%, 21K is 87.5%, 18K is 75%. The gram price scales with purity. Most UAE jewellery is 22K or 21K.
