How to Negotiate Gold Price in a Dubai Souk

You can't haggle the gold itself – but you can negotiate the part that actually has margin.

Bargaining is expected in Dubai's gold souks, but most people negotiate the wrong thing. Here's how to do it properly: what's fixed, what's flexible, and the exact questions that get you a better price.

The one rule: negotiate the making charge, not the gold

The gold gram rate is fixed by the official daily rate – no shop will (or can) move it. The making charge is the negotiable part, and it's where the shop's margin lives. Every dirham you save comes from there.

Target: 20–30% off the making charge. This is a normal ask, not a cheeky one. It works best on heavier pieces and when you're paying cash.

Step by step in the shop

  1. Ask for the two numbers separately: "What's today's gram rate for this karat, and what's the making charge per gram?" Never accept just a lump-sum total.
  2. Check the gram rate against the official daily rate (the app shows the live rate). It should match.
  3. Compare the making charge to fair ranges – AED 5–15/g simple, 10–30/g medium, 30–60+/g intricate. See our making charges guide.
  4. Make your counter on the making charge: "Can you do the making at [20–30% lower]?"
  5. Be ready to walk. There are dozens of shops selling the same gold. Walking is the strongest card you have – and a quote from the shop next door is real leverage.

Seller tactics to watch for

Walk in already knowing the fair price

The strongest negotiating position is knowing the right number before you open your mouth. The free Gold Sooq Guide app shows the live gold rate, calculates the fair total for any weight and karat, and flags whether a making charge is fair or high – right there in the shop. You can also save each shop's quote and compare them side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Can you negotiate gold prices in Dubai?

You can't negotiate the gram rate (it's fixed by the daily rate), but you can and should negotiate the making charge. Asking for 20–30% off is normal.

How much can you bargain off gold in the souk?

Typically 20–30% off the making charge, more on heavier pieces or for cash. The gold value itself doesn't move.

What tricks do gold sellers use?

Lump-sum quotes that hide the making charge, "zero making charge" deals with an inflated gram price, and weighing stones as gold. Ask for the two numbers separately and insist non-gold materials are weighed apart.
